BASF Zhanjiang Integrated Base Acrylate Project Mechanically Completed

ECHEMI 2025-07-24

The construction of BASF Zhanjiang Integrated Base has reached an important milestone, with the first batch of units of the acrylic acid complex successfully mechanically completed, including the glacial acrylic acid (GAA) unit and the butyl acrylate (BA) unit.

This achievement marks an important step towards the planned production in 2025, further consolidating BASF's global leading position in the acrylic acid market.

“Acrylic acid has always been the cornerstone of BASF’s petrochemical business. With the completion of the new acrylic acid production unit in Zhanjiang, we will further enhance our production capacity along the acrylic acid value chain. These new world-class production units will enable us to reliably supply high-quality, competitive products with shorter lead times to meet the rapidly growing demand for acrylic acid in China and across Asia,” said Bir Darbar Mehta, Senior Vice President, Petrochemicals, BASF Asia Pacific.

“Since breaking ground in 2023, our team has been committed to the highest safety and quality standards throughout the construction and mechanical completion process and has made excellent progress,” said Han Liang, Vice President, Industrial Petrochemical Operations, BASF Asia Pacific Petrochemicals. “We are now in the commissioning and start-up phase and are confident that we will be operational in 2025 to provide excellent value to customers across the region.”

Acrylic acid is an important precursor for the production of highly absorbent polymers. Butyl acrylate is an ester of acrylic acid, which is widely used in the production of adhesives, architectural coatings and industrial coatings. The acrylate project at the Zhanjiang integrated base is scheduled to start production in 2025 with an annual production capacity of approximately 400,000 tons of butyl acrylate.
