China’s First Private Gas Venture in Africa 109.3 Billion Cubic Meter Contract Signed by Zhongman and Sonatrach
On July 22, Zhongman Petroleum made history by signing a gas exploration and development contract for the Zerafa II block with Algeria’s Sonatrach, marking the first entry of a Chinese private company into Africa’s natural gas sector. The agreement gives Zhongman a 90% stake, with Sonatrach holding 10%.
Covering an area of 38,697 square kilometers, the Zerafa II block has already identified seven oil and gas traps, with geological reserves and resources estimated at 109.3 billion cubic meters. The project is set for a development cycle of up to 40 years (30+10).
Zhongman Petroleum stood out among international bidders, securing the qualification for upstream projects in March 2025 and winning the tender for Zerafa II on June 17. This move follows Algeria’s five-year energy investment plan to attract foreign capital and boost the industry.
This landmark deal not only signals a breakthrough for Chinese private energy enterprises abroad but also accelerates the pace of China-Africa energy cooperation.
