Sinopec and Técnicas Reunidas Secure 4GW Green Hydrogen FEED Contract for Saudi Yanbu Project Global Capacity Record Set for 2030
Sinopec and Spain’s Técnicas Reunidas have been awarded the front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for Saudi Arabia’s massive 4GW green hydrogen-to-ammonia project in Yanbu, by ACWA Power, a company under the Saudi Public Investment Fund. The 10-month design phase will be followed by a multi-billion-euro EPC proposal, aiming to turn Saudi Arabia into a leading exporter of green ammonia for global decarbonization and power generation.
The Yanbu facility is set to feature 4GW of electrolyzer capacity, capable of producing 400,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, which will be converted into ammonia for export. The site will also include seawater desalination and a dedicated export terminal, but will not encompass renewable power generation in the initial phase. Commercial operations are targeted for 2030.
Currently, Sinopec operates the world’s largest green hydrogen plant in Xinjiang, China—but the Saudi Yanbu project, once operational, is expected to surpass it as the globe’s largest green hydrogen complex.
