Propylene Oxide Price Rally Seen as Short-Lived
The recent uptick in propylene oxide (PO) prices is likely to be fleeting, according to industry analysts. PO, a key intermediate for polyurethane foams and solvents, saw its market price rebound modestly in early August after a prolonged slump. However, market watchers caution that fundamentals do not support a sustained rally. On the supply side, new PO production capacity is expected to come on stream soon, easing the earlier tightness. At the same time, demand remains tepid – downstream orders for polyols and propylene glycol (major PO derivatives) have been sluggish, indicating that end-use consumption hasn’t picked up markedly. Without a clear positive shift in supply-demand balance, this price rise is viewed as temporary . Unless demand improves in the coming months or suppliers curtail output, the consensus is that PO prices will likely plateau or retreat, continuing the choppy, range-bound trading pattern seen for much of this year.
