Brazil Redefines “Milk”: New Rules Force Honesty on Dairy Labels
Brazil is cracking down on dairy deception. A draft regulation published November 24, 2025, mandates that non-fermented white milk drinks must label themselves “Not Milk”, while fermented versions must declare “Not Yogurt”—ending years of consumer confusion.
The rule also caps starch or gelatin additives at 3% and defines a new category: “ultra-pasteurized”—products heat-treated like UHT milk but filled non-aseptically, requiring refrigeration below 10°C.
By forcing transparency, Brazil aims to protect both consumers and genuine dairy producers. After all, if it walks like milk but contains fillers, it shouldn’t talk like milk.
