EFSA Eyes Higher Dodine Limits in Grapes—Safety Assured, Critics Wary

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has proposed a dramatic increase in the maximum residue level (MRL) for dodine in grapes—from the current 0.01 mg/kg (at the limit of quantification) to a striking 2 mg/kg, for both table and wine grapes.

The request came from Arysta Lifescience via Greek authorities, citing new agricultural uses. EFSA concluded that dietary exposure from such residues poses no short- or long-term risk to consumers.

Yet the jump—from virtually undetectable to 200 times higher—has raised eyebrows among environmental and consumer groups. While scientifically justified under current models, the move tests the EU’s commitment to its “farm to fork” pesticide reduction goals. The proposal now enters public consultation, where science will meet scrutiny.
