US-Iran Ceasefire—How Will the Market for Isooctanol Perform?

ECHEMI 2026-04-10

April 8th News

2-Ethylhexanol Market

According to the commodity market analysis system, the price of 2-ethylhexanol increased from about 6,700 CNY/ton at the beginning of March to 9,500 CNY/ton on April 8, a 42.5% increase, showing an overall one-sided upward trend. However, since mid-March, the price of 2-ethylhexanol first fell and then rose, with overall volatile consolidation. Affected by the rise in raw material costs, the price of 2-ethylhexanol significantly increased in early March. The supply and demand for 2-ethylhexanol remained in a stalemate, with limited support for the price increase from the supply and demand side.

US-Iran Ceasefire for Two Weeks

As the deadline set by the Trump administration approached, the United States and Iran, with Pakistan’s mediation, announced a two-week ceasefire agreement. Under the agreement, the ceasefire takes effect immediately, and Iran has agreed to temporarily open the Strait of Hormuz to ensure global shipping safety. Delegations from both the U.S. and Iran will hold negotiations in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, on April 10. This news triggered sharp volatility in global commodity markets, causing crude oil prices to plunge. However, given damage to energy infrastructure in the Middle East and the slow pace of supply chain restoration, oil prices are unlikely to return to pre-conflict levels anytime soon. Crude oil serves as the starting point for the chemical industry’s value chain, and falling oil prices directly reduce production costs. As costs decline, downward pressure on isooctanol prices is expected to intensify.

The supply and demand situation for 2-ethylhexanol in China is at an impasse.

Isobutanol enterprises are operating at high capacity, with isobutanol production facilities maintaining an operating load of over 90%, ensuring ample supply of isobutanol. Downstream demand is mainly characterized by rigid demand procurement. If the operating rate of the PVC industry in China decreases or export orders decline, the momentum for DOP price increases may weaken. Overall, the supply and demand situation for isobutanol in China remains in a stalemate.

Spot Market Trend Forecast

According to the commodity market analysis system, it can be seen that since the spot price average of isooctanol crossed above other price averages in early March, the spot price average has been above the 20-day, 30-day, and 60-day moving averages, indicating an upward trend. However, starting from mid-March, the spot price average of isooctanol and the 10-day moving average have been intertwined, suggesting that the isooctanol market in China has been fluctuating since mid-March.

On April 7, the price of 2-ethylhexanol reached a high in all cycles. In the past 20 days, the price of 2-ethylhexanol has been at a high level within the cycles (30 days, 60 days, 90 days, and one year), and it has been in an overbought alert state for the past year. The price has risen too quickly in the short term, deviating from the moving average, which increases the risk of a price drop and limits the potential for further increases. Within the past 20 days, the moving average of 2-ethylhexanol prices has repeatedly fallen below the 10-day moving average, indicating a strong willingness for the market price to fall. The 2-ethylhexanol market is currently in a stalemate, but the risk of a price decline is accumulating.

Comprehensive Analysis

The 2-ethylhexanol product data analyst believes that the supply and demand situation for 2-ethylhexanol remains at a stalemate, with no significant support for an increase in 2-ethylhexanol. From the trend of the 2-ethylhexanol price moving average and the price range warning, it can be seen that the risk of a decline in 2-ethylhexanol prices is increasing. In terms of costs, due to the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, crude oil prices have plummeted, leading to an expected decrease in the cost of 2-ethylhexanol, thus increasing the downward pressure on 2-ethylhexanol. Overall, with decreasing costs and a stalemate in supply and demand, it is expected that 2-ethylhexanol prices will fluctuate and fall in the future.
