Geopolitical Tensions in the Middle East Escalate, Leading to a Rebound in Isooctanol Prices

ECHEMI 2026-07-09

July 8 news

The price of 2-ethylhexanol has rebounded and increased in China.

According to the commodity market analysis system, the price of 2-ethylhexanol on July 8th was 6766.67 CNY/ton, rebounding from the price of 6733.33 CNY/ton on July 7th, with a price increase of 0.50%. On July 8th, the price of 2-ethylhexanol stopped falling and rebounded, with major 2-ethylhexanol manufacturers in China raising their factory prices, leading to a stop in the decline and an increase in the 2-ethylhexanol market.

Middle East Geopolitical Competition Intensifies

On July 7, local time, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Department of the Treasury officially revoked the sanctions waiver for Iranian oil sales, ending the previously relaxed policy on cross-border sales of Iranian crude oil and petrochemical products and fully reinstating the relevant sanctions. The core trigger for this sudden policy shift was the recent attack on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. side determined that Iran’s actions had violated the temporary consensus reached between the two sides, prompting an urgent tightening of energy sanctions against Iran. Following the announcement of the tightened sanctions, markets expressed concern that the U.S.-Iran interim ceasefire agreement had effectively collapsed, leading to an escalation of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a rapid surge in international crude oil prices.

Propylene cost rebounds and increases in China

According to the commodity market analysis system, on July 8th, the propylene price was 7,821 CNY/ton, which first decreased and then increased from the July 1st price of 7,811 CNY/ton, with a price increase of 0.13%. Compared to the propylene price of 7,647.67 CNY/ton on July 6th, it increased by 2.27%. The United States has tightened sanctions on Iranian oil, leading to a shipping safety crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, and an escalation in the confrontation between the U.S. and Iran. As a result, crude oil prices have risen, which has been transmitted downstream, causing propylene prices to rebound and increase. The cost of isooctanol has also risen, providing greater support for its price increase.

Outlook for the Future

The analyst specializing in octanol product data believes that, on the cost side: With geopolitical tensions in the Middle East escalating once again, crude oil and propylene prices have rebounded and are rising. Downstream chemical products will likely follow suit, boosting the cost support for isooctanol. Looking ahead, as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East intensify again, cost pressures on isooctanol will increase. Although isooctanol has stopped falling and begun to rise, weak demand is limiting its upward potential. Therefore, isooctanol prices are likely to consolidate strongly within a wide range in the near term.
