Carbon is the fourth most abundant universe element after oxygen, hydrogen, and helium and in the crust of the Earth, it is the 15th most abundant element. Carbon as an element was discovered to handle charcoal from a burning fire. It was one of the elements known in the ancient world together with iron, sulfur, lead, copper, tin, silver, mercury, and gold. Uses of Carbon

Hydrocarbons that are extracted as fossil fuels like oil, coal, and natural gas are commonly used as fuels. A small portion is also used as feedstock for petrochemical industries that produce fibers, polymers, solvents, paints, and plastics. Impure carbon from wood in a charcoal form and coke coming from coal are all used in metal smelting. They are important in the steel and iron industries. Graphite is used in every pencil. Activated charcoal is found in kitchen extractor hoods and respirators which is used for filtration and purification. Carbon fiber is used in skis, tennis rackets, fishing rods, airplanes, and rockets. Industrial diamonds are of great use for drilling and cutting rocks. Films of diamonds are used in protecting surfaces like razor blades.

 

Allotropes of Carbon

Graphite, amorphous, and diamond are the three natural allotropes of carbon known to exist in carbon. Graphite is a form of carbon that is used as a lubricant and it is one of the softest materials being known. Amorphous carbon is being formed when a material that contains carbon is burned without having enough oxygen to burn completely. Diamond is known as the hardest substance and is commonly used for jewelry.

 

Carbon Compounds

There are almost ten million carbon compounds that are known and as we know it, many of these compounds are essential for life. Some of the most well-known carbon compounds are carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), chloroform (CHCl3), carbon disulfide (CS2), methane (CH4), ethylene, benzene, acetylene, carbon tetrachloride, acetic acid, and ethyl alcohol.

 

Components of Carbon

Graphite is present and can be found in many locations. Diamond is found in the microscopic form of crystals in some meteorites. Natural diamonds are found in the mineral kimberlite. Carbon can be found in all living things. It can be found also in fossils that remain in the forms of carbonates and hydrocarbons.
