Kraton And Saudi Basic Industries SABIC Launched Renewable Butadiene, Previously Launched Bio-PC Resin

ECHEMI 2022-03-18

Kraton Corporation, a global producer of specialty polymers and high-value bio-based products, has partnered with global chemicals company SABIC (Saudi Basic Industries Corporation) to produce internationally sustainable 100% sustainable products at its Kraton manufacturing facility in Berre, France. Development and carbon certification (ISCC PLUS certified) of renewable styrenic block copolymers derived from pine pulp by-products.

Previously, SABIC launched the first bio-based PC resin for the production of domestic Relame mobile phones. Based on internal assessments, the new bio-based resin can reduce CO2 emissions by 2 kg per kg.

The new ISCC PLUS Certified Renewable CirKular+ ReNew range expands Kraton's existing suite of solutions aimed at advancing the circular economy. With up to 70% certified renewable content, the ReNew range allows customers to produce renewable products using a mass balance approach and with ISCC PLUS certification.

Earlier this year, Kraton produced the CirKular+ ReNew line of hydrogenated styrene block copolymers (HSBC) at the Berre facility using SABIC's renewable butadiene from the company's Truecircle recycling solutions portfolio.

1. Butadiene that reduces carbon dioxide emissions

SABIC Certified Renewable Butadiene is derived from second-generation renewable feedstocks that are free of animal and palm oil, such as tall oil by-products from the pulping of wood pulp in the paper industry, which do not directly compete with humans for food and animal feed. production source.

Each kilogram of SABIC's certified renewable butadiene reduces CO2 emissions by an average of 4 kilograms compared to virgin fossil-based alternatives. Based on a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment, from sourcing raw materials to producing monomers. In addition, the company added that each metric ton of this butadiene could reduce fossil consumption by up to 80 percent.

2. Circular plan

Launched in 2020, the CirKular+ product line uses a holistic approach to the product life cycle to provide high-performance, innovative solutions for the circular economy and plastic upcycling, Kraton said. In addition, the company says these products can help customers switch to renewable materials, improve product performance, reduce carbon footprint, and drive the use of recycled plastics.

SABIC's Trucircle portfolio covers a range of products and services, including design for recyclability, mechanical recycling products, certified circular products from waste plastic feedstock recycling, certified renewable energy products from bio-based feedstocks, and recycling plastics to high Efficient closed-loop programs.

“Kraton’s ambition is to achieve a bioeconomy and play a role in advancing a circular economy. Value chain collaboration helps to achieve a circular economy,” said Holger Jung, Kraton Senior Vice President and President of the Polymers Division.

"This is an exciting innovation for our customers as it can help reduce the carbon footprint of fossil-based HSBCs produced at our Bell facility by up to 65%," he asserted.

Mohammed Al-Zahrani, Vice President of Chemicals at SABIC, added: "Developing more environmentally] sustainable solutions requires partnerships across the value chain."

"Our partnership with Kraton to develop renewable butadiene as a feedstock for Kraton polymers is another example of our joint efforts to achieve our common goals and confirms the chemical industry's broad interest in developing environmentally sustainable solutions for the future," he concluded.

Last year, Mars Petcare launched what it said was the world's first recyclable packaging for wet pet food. Developed in collaboration with Huhtamaki and SABIC, the bags are manufactured through chemical recycling.
