China's Orthopaedic Surgical Robot Industry Enters The Fast Lane With Full Market Potential

ECHEMI 2022-03-21

Orthopaedics is one of the earliest fields involved in surgical robots, and is also a hot spot for the development and industrialization of surgical robots. Orthopaedic surgery robots are mainly used in trauma orthopaedics, spine surgery and joint surgery, of which the popularity of robot-assisted joint replacement surgery is relatively high.

In the increasingly competitive landscape, domestic enterprises have increased their independent research and development efforts, and have been favored by capital.

Based on China's large population base, the acceleration of the aging process, the gradual sinking of quality medical resources, and the promotion of the national centralized procurement policy for artificial joints, China's orthopaedic surgery robot market demand is expected to be released in large quantities, and the industry will usher in rapid development.

Fierce competition in the race track

At present, the orthopaedic surgery robot field shows a market pattern of multiple strong competition. The overseas layout of orthopaedic surgery robot track companies are Stryker, Johnson & Johnson, Gemini, Schluter, Medtronic and so on. In recent years, a number of domestic companies have also entered the orthopaedic surgery robot field, such as Tianzhihang, Minimally Invasive Medical, Weigao Group, Rosenbottom and others.

Among them, Tianzhihang, whose main business is orthopaedic surgery robots, is the leading enterprise in this field in China; Weigao Group and other listed companies have been expanding their business fields in recent years, and have also started to actively layout the research and development of orthopaedic surgery robots.

It is noteworthy that, unlike foreign industry giants who have acquired their way to track layout, domestic orthopaedic surgery robot companies have been strengthening technical collaboration and focusing on independent research and development mainly through joint hospitals, universities and research institutions.

  High capital attention

China's orthopedic surgery robot industry started late and is still at the early stage of industrialization due to the high technical threshold of the field. Public data shows that financing in the field of orthopedic surgery robots in China is mainly concentrated in the A and B rounds, with a relatively small number of seed rounds and angel rounds, and the threshold for startups to enter the industry is high.

In recent years, China's orthopaedic surgery robotics financing market has been hot, with the number of billion dollar financing rounds growing. In July 2020, Tianzhihang made its debut listing on the science and technology board, raising 452 million yuan.

Yuanhua Intelligence, an innovative enterprise established in 2018 focusing on orthopaedic surgery robot research and development, completed a RMB 200 million Series A financing in March 2021; in January 2022, Yuanhua Intelligence announced the completion of another several hundred million RMB Series B financing.

China's orthopaedic surgery robotics sector is highly favoured by capital, and the number and amount of funding for this sector is forecast to continue to rise in the future.
