BASF to offer first net-zero emissions and minimised carbon footprint products

ECHEMI 2022-04-02

By using renewable electricity, low carbon steam, bio-based feedstocks and efficient processes, BASF will offer its customers net-zero emissions and minimised carbon footprint (PCF) products.

BASF has reportedly developed an in-house digital solution that calculates the carbon footprint of approximately 45,000 products sold. Using this tool, BASF currently uses industry averages and values from commercial databases as a basis to cover the upstream Scope 3 emissions. In order to improve the transparency of Scope 3 emissions, BASF is working closely with suppliers to improve the data on raw materials purchased from them.

BASF supports suppliers by sharing its knowledge in assessment and calculation methods and in this way contributes to the standardisation of carbon footprint calculations.

"BASF is making significant progress on the road to achieving its emissions reduction targets. And we are ready to take the next step in our plan - sustainable growth through products with a minimal carbon footprint." Dr. Bo Muller said.

Over the five-year period from 2026 to 2030, BASF's capital expenditure is expected to increase to around €2 billion to €3 billion. During this period, BASF plans to bring the first new carbon management technologies to scale and accelerate the conversion to renewable energy.

Thereafter, additional investments are expected to be made to build world-class scale production sites using the new technologies and to further expand the use of renewable energy sources beyond 2030.
