Zhanjiang: a leader in sustainable development

ECHEMI 2022-04-02

Zhanjiang will become BASF's third largest integration site worldwide. Compared to petrochemical sites powered by natural gas, Zhanjiang's advanced integration concept and the use of renewable energy play an important role in helping it to significantly reduce its CO2 emissions.

BASF has recently signed a 25-year renewable energy cooperation framework agreement with State Power Investment under the Guangdong Renewable Energy Trading Rules to procure renewable energy power for the successor to its new integrated site in Zhanjiang, Guangdong.

The agreement is the largest and longest framework agreement signed by BASF in China for the purchase of electricity from renewable energy sources.

With the support of this deal and other related collaborations, BASF will further accelerate the process of supplying electricity from renewable sources, aiming to supply 100% renewable electricity to the entire Zhanjiang integration site by 2025, ahead of the original plan.

Schwarzheide becomes an example of energy transition for medium-sized production sites

In February 2022, BASF Schwarzhead GmbH formed a joint venture with enviaM to build a solar power park that is expected to generate 25 GWh of electricity annually, which will cover approximately 10% of the site's current annual electricity demand.

This will be the first large-scale solar power plant in which BASF is directly involved, supplying the Schwarzhead site with solar energy for the production of battery materials for electric vehicles from the end of 2022.

The site's own hybrid natural gas and steam turbine power station has now been largely modernised. Once this power station is operational in late 2022, its higher fuel efficiency will boost power production by 10% and reduce CO2 emissions by 16%.
