World's Largest Carbon Energy Storage Project Completed

2022-09-13

Carbon dioxide energy storage is a kind of compressed gas energy storage, using carbon dioxide as a circulating mass for charging and discharging. Flywheel energy storage, on the other hand, is a type of energy storage that can achieve two-way conversion of electrical energy and kinetic energy through an electric/electricity generation integrated two-way high-efficiency motor with a flywheel in a vacuum, which can achieve millisecond-level rapid response.

On August 25, the completion ceremony of the world's first CO2+flywheel energy storage demonstration project was successfully held in Deyang, China. This project is also the world's largest CO2 energy storage project with the largest single power and the largest energy storage capacity.

The project is jointly built by Dongfang Turbine, Bairang New Energy Technology (Shenzhen) Co. The project covers an area of 18,000 square meters, which is about the size of two and a half soccer fields, and the scale of energy storage is 10MW/20MWh, which can fill 20,000 kWh of electricity in 2 hours, which is the world's largest CO2 storage project with the largest single power and storage capacity, and the world's first CO2+flywheel energy storage integrated energy station.

During the low period of electricity consumption, this "rechargeable treasure" turns on the charging mode, the compressor starts, and in 2 hours it can compress all the carbon dioxide gas in the huge flexible silo with a volume of 250,000 cubic meters into liquid state, the volume is only 1/300 of the original; when the peak of electricity consumption comes, it will return to the gas state and push the turbine to generate electricity. Again, in just 2 hours, 20,000 kWh of electricity can be generated, enough to power more than 60 households for 1 month.

As the compressor starts up and steadily ramps up to rated speed, CO2 gas is extracted and compressed from the huge flexible gas bin, marking the completion of the world's first CO2+ flywheel energy storage demonstration project, presented to the world, which is also one of the demonstration application scenarios for the 2022 World Clean Energy Congress.

Carbon dioxide energy storage features.

Carbon dioxide energy storage is a kind of compressed gas energy storage, which uses carbon dioxide as a circulating work substance for charging and discharging. When the charging mode is turned on during the low period of electricity consumption, the compressor starts, and in 2 hours, all the carbon dioxide gas in the huge flexible gas bin with a volume of 250,000 cubic meters can be compressed into liquid state, with only 1/300 of the original volume; when the peak of electricity consumption comes, it is made to return to the gaseous state and push the turbine to generate electricity, also in only 2 hours, it can generate 20,000 degrees of electricity, enough for more than 60 families to use for 1 month. Flywheel energy storage is a kind of energy storage method that can achieve the two-way conversion of electric and kinetic energy through the electric/generating two-way high-efficiency motor with the flywheel in the vacuum, which can achieve the millisecond rapid response.

Combining the advantages of long time and large scale of CO2 energy storage and fast response of flywheel energy storage, the world's first CO2+flywheel energy storage demonstration project can effectively smooth out grid volatility, solve the intermittency problem, and realize safe grid operation, and the whole "charging and discharging" process will not use fossil fuels and produce no solid waste. emissions, green and environmentally friendly.

Compared with other energy storage systems, CO2 energy storage system is not restricted by geographical conditions, and can be built anywhere, with a construction cycle of less than 2 years; compared with electrochemical energy storage, it does not use rare metals or precious metals, and the working conditions are stable, and the cycle efficiency can be maintained at more than 60% in the service life of up to 30 years. Carbon dioxide has the excellent advantages of non-toxic, non-flammable, easy to obtain, can be liquefied at room temperature, can easily achieve liquid storage, low storage costs and safe and reliable.

Carbon dioxide energy storage system has a wide range of power levels, capacity and geographical adaptability, and has excellent economic benefits for large-capacity long-term energy storage, especially suitable for 10MW-class, 100MW-class and 1000MW-class long-term energy storage systems. The system can not only be used with solar energy, wind power and other new energy sources to effectively compensate for their weaknesses in providing stable and continuous power supply, but also be used with traditional thermal power as power compensation for small load conditions during flexible operation of traditional thermal power, which can significantly improve the unit's peaking capacity and comprehensive energy utilization efficiency.
