Qatar Energy CP Chemical Co-construction of Ras Lavan Petrochemical Plant
Qatar Energy announced that it had made a final investment decision with its partner Chevron Phillips Chemical (hereinafter referred to as CP Chemical). The two sides will jointly invest US $6 billion to build the Ras Lavan petrochemical plant.
Qatar Energy said that Ras Lavan Petrochemical Plant is expected to be put into operation in 2026, including one ethane cracking unit and two polyethylene (PE) units. Ethane cracking unit will produce 2.1 million tons of ethylene annually, and PE unit will produce 1.7 million tons of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) annually.
It is reported that Qatar Energy Company owns 70% of the shares of the joint venture Ras Lavan Petrochemical Company, while CP Chemical owns the remaining 30%. Saad Qaabi, chief executive of Qatar Energy, said: "This is the largest investment of Qatar Energy in the history of Qatar's petrochemical industry, and is an important milestone in the company's downstream expansion strategy."
According to CP Chemical, the construction of Ras Lavan Petrochemical Plant has started in June 2022. The engineering, procurement and construction of ethane cracking unit will be carried out by a joint venture between Samsung Engineering Company and Zhongding Engineering Company. Tecnimont will carry out the engineering, procurement and construction of PE plant.
