What are the uses of Soda ash or sodium bicarbonate

ECHEMI 2022-06-08

Soda ash or sodium bicarbonate is an alkali chemical compound and the sodium salt of carbonic acid. It has a pH of 8.5, with a solubility of 1.8 g/L in water at 25℃ (77 ℉). It is the sodium salt of a weak base (sodium bicarbonate), which is the source of its other name. It is mainly a water-soluble solid. It is moderately soluble in ethanol and methanol, but practically insoluble in ether and acetone. The anhydrous form melts at 106 ℃ (221 ℉). The pH of solutions containing soda ash are subject to change as carbon dioxide from decomposing sodium bicarbonate escapes into the atmosphere, according to Le chatelier's Principle.

Uses of sodium bicarbonate

1. Antacid

It is used to treat acid indigestion and heartburn. It neutralizes stomach acid by converting the HCl into a salt (NaCl) which is readily absorbed. It begins to work in the stomach in 30-45 minutes, and relief will be felt 1-2 hours after taking the tablet form.

2. Cleaning agent

It is used in cleaning agents as an abrasive and water softener, as well as a deodorizer and bleach additive. As an abrasive it is commonly used in toothpastes, facial cleansers, and liquid hand soaps among other products. It is also used in cleaning glass, porcelain and ceramic tile. It is used in some cat litters.

3. Water softener

Bathtubs, sinks, and washing machines can be made soft through the use of soda ash as a water softener. It is usually added to the water during the final rinse cycle to prevent soap scum from sticking to surfaces. It also reduces limescale build-up on faucets and showerheads.

4. photography

It is used as a fixer in photography processing solutions, primarily intended for black-and-white film but also used with some color films (particularly those brands which are processed at elevated temperatures). It is also used to prepare Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) a water soluble chelating agent.

5. Metal treatment

It is used to remove haze from the surface of metals prior to electroplating, and can also be used to adjust the pH of lixiviant solutions. It is also used as a passivation agent, preventing harmful reactions with the surface of metals when they are stored in air or when impure products are added to them.

6. Organic synthesis

It is primarily used as an acidity regulator in organic syntheses, e.g. to increase the acidity of dioxane (an otherwise nonpolar solvent) to near that of water. It can also be used in the synthesis of dyes, and is also an intermediate in some chemical syntheses, e.g. in the synthesis of EDTA chelating agent and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS).

7. Nail hardener

A mixture of one teaspoon soda ash with one tablespoon white vinegar can be applied to fingernails to help harden nails and remove ridges. It should be noted that this does not strengthen the nail, but simply evens out ridges and lines for a smoother look.

8. Soap making

It is used as a neutralizer in the melt-and-pour soapmaking method, where it prevents saponification (the chemical reaction which produces soap) from occurring until the soap is used. It also helps to give a harder texture to the finished product. It should be noted that sodium bicarbonate is also commonly used to help harden the soap and improve its shelf life.

9. Detergent

Soda ash or sodium bicarbonate can be added to some shampoos and soaps in order to increase their cleaning properties. This can mean a stronger cleaning effect, but it can also harm the soil-release of hard water. It is known as a buffering agent for hardness, which means that this chemical converts acids into salts by lowering the pH of water with an alkaline solution (a substance with a pH greater than 7). It is also used in laundry detergents as a buffering agent so that the detergent is stable at high temperatures.

10. Plants

It can be used for plants that are sensitive to harsh chemicals and acids, such as citrus fruits and tomatoes, because it regulates the pH of their environment and prevents oxidation of their cells. It can also be used in aquaria to keep aquarium water from reaching its boiling point at temperatures above 85 ℉ (29 ℃).

In conclusions soda ash or sodium bicarbonate has many uses. It is used in industry as a thickening agent, a water softener, a water treatment solution, and as an abrasive. In the home it is most familiar to us as an ingredient of baking powder and antacid.
