China powder coating industry remains high-speed growth momentum

It is reported that the domestic powder coating industry continues to maintain rapid growth under the promotion of environmental protection and related policies and the active efforts of the industry. In 2018, the sales volume of China’s powder coatings was close to 2 million tons, an increase of 9.7% year-on-year, exceeding the national total coatings growth. In the field of thermosetting powder coatings, the market share of powder coatings for building materials (including HVAC) was 29.4% in 2018; 21% for general industrial powder coatings, 19.7% for household appliance powder coatings, and 9.4% for furniture powder coatings. Functional (anti-corrosion) and agricultural engineering machinery and automotive powder coatings accounted for 8.9% and 7.8%, respectively.

Gao Yang, general manager of CNOOC Changzhou Coating Chemical Research Institute Co., Ltd., pointed out that the market share of general industrial, functional (anti-corrosion), agricultural engineering machinery and automotive powder coatings continued to grow, and the development of coating technology in key industries. The trend is mainly related to energy conservation and environmental protection. It is required to achieve “zero emission” in the coating process, and “paint change powder” has become a trend. As the world's largest producer and seller of powder coatings, the domestic coatings industry should take advantage of the trend and achieve high quality development.

Gao Yang emphasized that the rapid development of China’s powder coating industry is also inseparable from the rapid development of raw materials such as resins, additives, pigments and fillers and milling equipment. With the arrival of consumption, industrial upgrading and Industry 4.0, the powder coating industry has developed from extensive expansion to the fine-grained segmentation, grasping the opportunities of digital and intelligent integration development, focusing on intelligent manufacturing and building green products and green factories. The green manufacturing system based on the green industry chain, achieving cooperation and synergy in many fields such as raw materials, milling equipment, milling technology, pre-treatment, painting, etc., is the future development direction of the industry.
