What are the uses of concentrated sulfuric acid?

ECHEMI 2022-08-15

Here are some of the more common uses of concentrated sulfuric acid. The chemical is primarily used in the manufacture of car batteries, detergents, dyes, textiles and many other products. Sulfuric acid is so much more than an industrial chemical because it has many household uses as well. You see, sulfuric acid is used in lead-acid car batteries to produce electricity to run automobiles. In addition to car batteries, sulfuric acid is also used in the manufacturing process of products such as fertilizers and pesticides that are necessary for growing food.

Various uses of concentrated sulfuric acid.

1. Detergent Manufacturing

Sulfuric Acid is the main ingredient in laundry detergent and it is used to remove oils, dirt, and stains from the clothes. A good detergent should have a minimum of four percent H2SO4 (sulfuric acid) in it. Sulfuric acid can also be used to make other detergents as well such as a soap-based detergent that uses sodium carbonate or potassium bicarbonate. This type of detergent doesn't contain any bleach so it's not ideal for removing blood stains, but it is ideal for lightening dark fabrics.

2. Textiles Manufacture

Sulfuric Acid is used in the textile industry to make dyes. Sulphuric Acid is necessary to extract the color from colorants and dyes. Most of the time, Sulfuric Acid is used with different types of shades to create mixture that will then be added to dyeing machine or tubs. Sulfuric Acid can also be used to wash the clothing after it is dyed.

3. Lead-Acid Battery Production

Concentrated sulfuric acid is an important part of lead-acid car batteries. Whenever we use our cars we produce a current through a chemical reaction from electrolytes that contain sulfuric acid and water. In order to produce that current, you need sulfuric acid to exchange hydrogen and oxygen ions.

4. Agrochemicals manufacturing

Sulfuric acid is used in the production of fungicides, herbicides, and plant growth regulators. It is also used as a disinfectant for sterilizing equipment and it is a main ingredient in the production of fire extinguishers and drain openers. This chemical can also be found in some pesticides such as diquat dibromide and methyl bromide.

5. Laboratory & Industrial Uses

Sulfuric acid can be used in laboratories for a variety of different purposes. Sulfuric acid is used for the manufacturing process of many different chemicals such as pharmaceuticals, dyes and photographic chemicals. It can also be used to make fertilizer and bakelite.

6. Fire Extinguisher Substances

Sulfuric Acid can also be used as a substance for fire extinguishers and as a drain opener because it is attracted to water which means that it displaces the water and forms gases that will cause fire to go out.

7. Chemical Weapon Substances

Sulfuric Acid is also used for chemical weapon substances such as Sarin, VX and Tabun.

8. Gas Refinery

Sulfuric acid can be used in the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and crude oil to release energy instead of carbon dioxide which is an emitted gas during burning processes. This process can reduce the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and also reduce their effects on climate change. It only uses a simple concept which is to mix sulfuric acid with fossil fuel in reactors that contain catalysts, heaters and pipes over a long period of time until there is one end product which is sulfur dioxide gas that has been released from chemical reactions.

9. Chemical Production Facilities

This chemical is also used in chemical production facilities such as oil refineries, pesticide factories and many more. Sulfuric Acid is used to make different types of chemicals in these facilities and the process usually happens inside tanks that are usually heated with high pressure which results in a chemical reaction.

Conclusion

Concentrated sulfuric Acid is a chemical with many different uses and it can be used in so many different ways. Sulfuric acid is mainly used in the manufacturing of car batteries although there are other products that use concentrated sulfuric acid. Industrial uses of sulfuric acid includes laundry detergent, dyes, textiles, lead-acid battery manufacturing, agrochemicals and chemical weapon substances. Sulfuric acid is also used in laboratories for a variety of different purposes such as materials testing and pharmaceuticals. Lastly, this chemical can be found in fire extinguishers because it is able to remove oxygen from water which causes fires to go out.
