Diet Trends 2020: Intermittent Fasting and Ketogenic Diet

ECHEMI 2020-01-17

Google announced its annual search analysis in early December 2019, which combines the most searched dietary trends across the United States and globally including intermittent and ketogenic diets. The analysis is based on trillions of search queries.

In recent years, many popular dieting methods have appeared, hoping to lose weight quickly. However, limiting calorie intake seems to be not that effective. A nutritious diet remains the ideal way to achieve a healthy lifestyle. Experts suggest that people should not be hungry nor full, but accept an intuitive diet to listen to your body's needs in a timely manner, and use food as a nutritional supplement rather than limiting energy intake.

Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting (IF) is a diet that circulates between fasting and eating. It does not specify the type of food that should be consumed, but rather emphasizes when to eat. This is based on the principle of insulin action, that is, during the period of fasting, the insulin level in the body will decrease. At this time, the fat cells will release the stored sugar to power the body. After the sugar supply is completed, the body will start using fat to supply energy to achieve weight loss.

The IF diet is usually divided into two categories: limited daily eating, which shortens the daily eating time to 6-8 hours; and 5: 2 intermittent diet, that is, only 1/4 of the usual diet is taken two days a week (non-continuous).

Studies have shown that IF has benefits beyond reducing free radical production or weight loss. It is also effective in regulating anti-stress response and inhibiting inflammation. In addition, other studies have found that IF appears to improve multiple indicators of cardiovascular health in animals and humans, including blood pressure, heart rate, high and low density lipoprotein (HDL and LDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, blood glucose, and insulin resistance. If done right, more benefits may continue to emerge.

To follow the consumer market of IF diet, industry manufacturer Rosa Foods has launched a breakthrough product, Soylent Bridge. There are only 180 calories per serving, which is the perfect solution to the hunger between meals. It provides consumers with a more nutritious, plant-based food that can replace traditional snacks (including sugar and calories).

Ketogenic Diet

In recent years, the ketogenic diet has been followed by more and more consumers, and once topped the Google search rankings. In fact, the ketogenic diet is a balanced diet of low-carbon water, high fat, protein and other nutrients. Because it only consumes a small amount of low carbohydrates, the body metabolizes fat into ketone bodies. As another source of body energy, it accumulates to a certain extent as "ketosis", so it is called a "ketogenic diet".

At first, this diet pattern was used to treat refractory epilepsy in children. Later, a large number of studies have confirmed that it has a certain effect in the treatment and prevention of chronic diseases such as diabetes. And many consumer practices have concluded that the correct ketogenic diet can improve the body's metabolic activity, increase the ability of fat function during exercise, effectively help fat burning, and achieve weight loss.

This diet also inspired NPD, and many brands are trying to use its marketing potential.

Recently, SlimFast has added instant meal replacement shakes to its premium nutrition line (banana and cream). This product is a low-carb, lactose- and gluten-free food that contains 24 vitamins and minerals. Provides 20 grams of protein and 5 grams of cellulose.

Sated also launched a ready-to-use portable ketogenic milkshake mixed drink to cater for the market.
