I've watched people change car batteries like it's no big deal—no gloves, no eye protection. That acid electrolyte (30-50% concentration) burns skin and eyes. Don't open those sealed units either—the acid plus hydrogen gas equals explosion risk. Fact.
Some drain cleaners run 96% sulfuric acid. Pure. That stuff eats through organic matter like hair and grease, but mix it with bleach and you get chlorine gas. Ventilation and protection aren't optional. And septic systems? Acid kills the bacteria that actually work down there.
Steel mills use sulfuric acid for pickling—removing rust and scale before coating. Textile operations bleach fabrics with it. Refineries clean crude oil. Different concentrations, same principle: respect the chemical or pay the price.
Check labels for "H₂SO₄" or "oil of vitriol" when they don't spell out sulfuric acid. Look for the corrosion pictogram—a test tube eating through metal. GHS classification makes these warnings standard across manufacturers.
Skin exposure needs 15+ minutes water flushing. Eyes need 20 minutes continuous. Inhalation causes breathing problems. Always keep safety gear near acid-handling areas.
Store away from bases, metals, organics. Have spill materials ready. Don't neutralize acid spills with bases unless trained—the heat reaction creates new dangers.
No regular trash disposal. EPA regulates under RCRA. Improper disposal ruins soil and groundwater for decades. Batteries go to recyclers only.
Commercial operations need storage permits, follow OSHA rules. Training on acid handling isn't suggestion—it's requirement.
The contact process produces other chemicals using sulfuric acid. Fertilizer operations process phosphate with it. Industrial-grade safety measures apply.
Bottom line: sulfuric acid isn't just lab equipment. It's in regular-use products, often hidden. Recognize presence, understand risks, follow safety. Read labels, gear up, dispose properly.
