Oxea puts n-propanol on sales control citing surging demand, logistics
Oxea has put n-propanol and n-propyl acetate on 100% sales control for the second quarter, citing recent strong demand growth and “logistics issues and service related to the COVID-19 [coronavirus disease 2019] stay-at-home orders." Allocations will be based on average monthly consumption over the last six months or as contracts allow.
n-propanol is manufactured by the hydrogenation of propionaldehyde, an ethylene derivative. It is used primarily as a solvent for printing inks, either directly or as the derivative n-propyl ACETATE. It is also used in the production of disinfectants and sanitary products such as hand gels. Last month, the British Coatings Federation reported that prices had tripled in the course of a week amid surging demand driven by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Oxea produces n-propanol at its Bay City, Texas, facility. Other major producers are Dow, Eastman, BASF, and Perstorp.
