Francisella pneumonia
Tularemia is a common zoonotic disease in the United States. The causative agent, Francisella tularensis, is widely parasitic on many wild animals, livestock, and birds. Tick or deer fly bites are the main mode of transmission. Like other plagues, tularemia primarily affects the skin and local lymph nodes and is characterized by focal suppurative and granulomatous inflammatory reactions throughout the body. Pulmonary involvement is generally secondary to bacteremia or primary inhalation of pathogens. In ulcerative granulomas caused by Francisella tularensis, the lungs are involved in approximately 10% to 15% of cases.
