Ocular Cysticercosis
Cysticercus cellulosae, commonly known as bladder worm, is the larvae of the chain tapeworm, or pork tapeworm (teania solium). The worm body is a white, translucent cystic object, spherical or oval, with a diameter of about 5 to 8 mm, filled with transparent cystic fluid, and the cyst wall is composed of an outer cortex and an inner interstitial layer. The interstitial layer has a head segment that curls inward and can be turned out when stimulated by bile. Cysticercus can invade many organs of the human body and cause corresponding lesions. When invading the eye, it is more common in the eye than in the orbit. It is found in the vitreous body in the eye and in the extraocular muscle in the orbit. Cysticercus parasitism can cause serious damage to eye tissue and visual function. Cysticercus cellulosae is the larval stage of pork tapeworm. Parasitism in the human body can cause cysticercosis, also known as cysticercosis. Cysticercus cellulosae parasitizing the eye causes ocular cysticercosis. If the parasite is in the eyelid, a painless mass without redness or swelling can be felt. When the parasite is in the conjunctiva, the conjunctiva is congested and edematous and there is a foreign body sensation. After the parasite dies in the eye, the decomposition of the parasite protein causes strong stimulation, and even causes widespread inflammation in the eye, with serious consequences. Therefore, early diagnosis and timely treatment are particularly important.
