Ocular Toxoplasmosis
Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic parasitic protozoan disease with worldwide distribution. Its pathogen is Toxoplasma gondii. The protozoa are intracellular parasites, with cats as their final hosts and humans and other mammals as intermediate hosts. Congenital toxoplasmosis can be caused by infection of the fetus through the human placenta, and acquired toxoplasmosis can also be caused by infection through the digestive tract, damaged skin and mucous membranes, blood transfusion or organ transplantation. Congenital toxoplasmosis is one of the most serious congenital infections in humans, with a high mortality rate, mainly manifested as malformed children, poor growth and development, eye and brain diseases, etc. Acquired toxoplasmosis is milder and has a lower mortality rate, but the clinical manifestations are complex and often atypical, mainly involving organs such as lymph nodes, central nervous system and heart. Toxoplasmosis is also a common cause of potential blinding eye diseases. Retinal choroiditis is the most common eye lesion caused by toxoplasma infection. In Europe and the United States, toxoplasmosis retinochoroiditis accounts for about 30% to 50% of all uveitis, and in some places it is as high as 60%. It is the first uveitis with a clear cause. In my country, someone first isolated Toxoplasma in cats and rabbits in Fujian in 1957. An author reported a case of a 1.5-year-old child in Jiangxi. In addition to mental retardation and epilepsy, he also had small eyeballs, nystagmus, and one pupil closure. The surface of the optic disc of the other eye was exuded, and a raised lesion was seen on the inner side, with bleeding on the edge, and a plaque was visible in the macula. Toxoplasma was isolated from mice inoculated with cerebrospinal fluid, which was the first case of Toxoplasma in my country. Subsequently, reports were made in Guangdong, Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Hebei and other places.
