Esophageal heterotopic tissue
Bergmann et al. (1958) first reported this type of malformation, also known as solid intramural tracheolbronchial rests in the esophagus or choristomas. Both the esophagus and the trachea develop from the embryonic foregut. In the third week of the embryo, the two are a common tubular organ. During the separation of the trachea and esophagus in the sixth week, tracheal cartilage is lost in the esophageal wall. The esophageal wall contains mucous glands, which mostly occur in the lower esophagus.
