Vitamin C deficiency in children
Vitamin C deficiency disease, also known as scurvy, is caused by insufficient vitamin C in food, digestive absorption disorders or increased requirements, which leads to vitamin C deficiency. It is more common in children aged 8 months to 2 years and rare in adults. It is a systemic disease characterized by bone changes and increased capillary permeability due to long-term vitamin C (ascorbic acid) deficiency. Clinically, it is characterized by bone disorders and bleeding tendency, hyperkeratotic follicular papules surrounded by capillary bleeding, which are quite characteristic manifestations. It is generally rare now, but it can occur in northern pastoral areas where fresh vegetables and fruits are scarce, or in places where artificially fed children are neglected in cities and villages, or in the release of ascorbic acid oxidase after being chopped, cut, squeezed, or torn, or in the case of excessive heating and boiling time, or in the case of cooked dishes left for too long.
