Drug Interactions

Pharmacokinetic interaction studies of cetirizine in adults have shown that antipyrine, ketoconazole, erythromycin and azithromycin have no interaction with cetirizine. Studies on multiple doses of theophylline (400 mg once a day for 3 consecutive days) and cetirizine (20 mg once a day for 3 consecutive days) have shown that the body clearance of cetirizine decreased by 16%. It is speculated that larger doses of theophylline may have a greater effect. The distribution of theophylline is not changed by the presence of cetirizine. The simultaneous use of antihypertensive drugs with sympathetic inhibition (such as methyldopa, reserpine, etc.) will reduce the latter's hypotensive effect. Pseudoephedrine can increase ectopic pacemaker activity when used simultaneously with digitalis.
