Ribavirin Granules

Function and Efficacy

Ribavirin is a synthetic nucleoside antiviral drug. In vitro cell culture experiments have shown that ribavirin has a selective inhibitory effect on respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The mechanism of action of ribavirin is still unclear, but the results that its in vitro antiviral activity can be reversed by guanosine and xanthine nucleosides suggest that ribavirin may act as a metabolic analog of these cells.

Appearance

This product is white or off-white granules.

Indication

This product is suitable for viral pneumonia and bronchitis caused by respiratory syncytial virus, and herpes virus infection of the skin.

Usage and Dosage

This product is completely dissolved in warm water and taken orally. 1 Viral respiratory tract infection: Adults take 0.15g once, 3 times a day, for 7 days. 2 Skin herpes virus infection: Adults take 0.3g once, 3 times a day, for 7 days.

Adverse Reactions

The main toxicity of ribavirin is hemolytic anemia, with a decrease in hemoglobin occurring within the first 1-2 weeks after oral treatment, and approximately 10% of patients may experience cardiopulmonary side effects. Hemoglobin should be monitored frequently before, during and after treatment, and ribavirin is not recommended for patients with thalassemia or sickle cell anemia. Ribavirin should not be used in patients with symptoms of pancreatitis or clear pancreatitis. There have been reports that patients with anemia may suffer fatal or non-fatal myocardial damage when taking ribavirin, so patients with a history of heart disease or obvious symptoms of heart disease should not use ribavirin. If any symptoms of worsening heart disease occur while using ribavirin, the drug should be discontinued immediately and appropriate treatment should be given. General systemic adverse reactions observed in clinical trials related to ribavirin include: fatigue, headache, and weakness.

Precautions

1. It is contraindicated for those who are allergic to any ingredient in this product. 2. It is contraindicated for pregnant women. 3. It is contraindicated for patients with autoimmune hepatitis.

Special Population Medication

Precautions for children: There is currently a lack of detailed research data. Precautions for pregnancy and lactation: Use with caution in pregnant and lactating women. Precautions for the elderly: No adequate clinical studies have been conducted on patients over 65 years old. The possibility of anemia in elderly patients using ribavirin is greater than that in young patients. The renal function of the elderly is often reduced, which can easily lead to accumulation. Ribavirin is not recommended for elderly patients.

Drug Interactions

Ribavirin can inhibit the conversion of zidovudine into active zidovudine phosphate. Therefore, ribavirin and zidovudine have an antagonistic effect when used together.
