Orlistat Capsules
Function and Efficacy
Orlistat is a long-acting and potent specific gastrointestinal lipase inhibitor. It exerts its therapeutic effect by forming a covalent bond with the active serine site of gastric lipase and pancreatic lipase in the stomach and small intestine to inactivate the enzyme. The inactivated enzyme cannot hydrolyze the fat in the food (mainly triglycerides) into absorbable free fatty acids and monoacylglycerol. Undigested triglycerides cannot be absorbed by the body, thereby reducing calorie intake and controlling weight. The drug does not need to be absorbed through the whole body to exert its efficacy.
Ingredients
The main ingredient of this product and its chemical name are: (S)-2-Formylamino-4-methyl-pentanoic acid (S)-1-[[(2S,3S)-3-hexyl-4-oxo-oxetanyl]methyl]-dodecyl ester.

Adverse Reactions
This product mainly causes gastrointestinal adverse reactions, which are related to the pharmacological mechanism of the drug to prevent the absorption of ingested fat. Common adverse reactions are: oily spots, increased gastrointestinal flatulence, urgency to defecate, fatty (oily) stools, steatorrhea, increased frequency of bowel movements and fecal incontinence.
Precautions
1. Patients who are allergic to orlistat or any of the ingredients in the preparation are contraindicated. 2. Patients with chronic malabsorption syndrome or cholestasis are contraindicated. 3. Patients with organic obesity (such as hypothyroidism) are contraindicated.
Special Population Medication
Precautions for children: The safety and efficacy of orlistat have been evaluated in obese adolescent patients aged 12 to 16 years old, and no dosage adjustment is required for patients in this age group taking orlistat. Safety and efficacy studies of orlistat for children under 12 years old have not been conducted. Precautions for pregnancy and lactation: No embryotoxicity or embryonic malformations associated with orlistat were observed in animal reproductive toxicity studies. However, animal reproductive toxicity studies cannot always accurately predict human responses, and in the absence of clinical data, it is not recommended that women take this product when pregnant. It is not clear whether orlistat is secreted in human milk, so breastfeeding women should not take this product. Precautions for the elderly: There is a lack of sufficient clinical research data to prove whether the use of orlistat in people aged 65 and above is different from that in younger patients.
