What is Berberin ?

Berberine is an alkaloid found in many plants, most notably white buttercup (Hydrastis canadensis), berberis (Berberis vulgaris), Oregon grape (Berberis aquifolium), and yellow dock (Coptis chinensis). These plants have been used for a variety of conditions for a long time. Several double-blind clinical studies have shown significant success in the treatment of acute diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, Alzheimer's disease and cancer with isolated berberine.

Berberine exists in plants as a quaternary ammonium alkaloid in the form of hydrochloride, all yellow crystals, free berberine dissolves 1:20 in cold water; 1:8 in hot water; 1:100 in cold ethanol; 1:12 in hot ethanol; 1:30 in water as hydrochloride; and 1:15 in sulphate.

Pharmaceutical effects:

1. Berberine is used for acute diarrhoea:

Berberine has been shown to be effective against diarrhoea caused by a number of different species of microorganisms, including Escherichia coli (traveller's diarrhoea), Shigella dysenteriae (shigellosis), Salmonella paratyphi (food poisoning), Klebsiella, Giardia (giardiasis), Amebascoides lysosomatis (amoebiasis) and Vibrio cholerae (cholera).

The results of these studies show that berberine appears to be effective in treating most common gastrointestinal infections; in most cases, the effects are comparable to those of standard antibiotics. In fact, several studies have shown better results than antibiotics. Where berberine outperforms conventional antibiotics is in its ability to target a broad range of disease-causing microorganisms (including Candida albicans), selectively exerting antimicrobial action, while health-promoting strains of bacteria (such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) are unaffected.
