Berberine Hydrochloride, also known as Flavopiridol Hydrochloride, has long been used in clinical practice as a purgative and antibacterial drug. It is commonly used in the treatment of bacillary dysentery, acute gastroenteritis, chronic cholecystitis, conjunctivitis and purulent otitis media, and has shown remarkable efficacy. Berberine hydrochloride is an alkaloid found in many plants of 4 families and 10 genera, including Berberaceae. Berberine precipitates from ether as yellow needle-like crystals. Berberine is a quaternary ammonium alkaloid and its salts are all relatively insoluble in water, e.g. 1:500 for the hydrochloride and 1:30 for the sulphate.

Berberine HCL is a quaternary ammonium salt from the protoberberine group of  alkaloids. It is found in such plants as Berberis (e.g. Berberis aquifolium (Oregon grape), Berberis vulgaris (Barberry), and Berberis aristata (Tree Turmeric)), Hydrastis canadensis (Goldenseal), Phellodendron amurense (Amur Cork Tree, Huang Bai, Huang Po,Po Mu) and Coptis chinensis (Chinese Goldthread, Huang-Lian, Huang-Lien), and Tinospora cordifolia, and to a smaller extent in Argemone mexicana (Prickly Poppy) and Eschscholzia californica (Californian Poppy). Berberine HCL is usually found in the roots, rhizomes, stems, and bark.
