Mechanism of Action

Dimetridazole inhibits the oxidative reduction reactions essential for the survival of protozoans. In susceptible strains of bacteria, dimetridazole undergoes a classical reduction pathway of nitroaromatic compounds, leading to the formation of a nitroso-radical anion and ultimately an azo-dimer, 5,5'-azobis-(1,2-dimethylimidazole).
