    Introduction
    Vitamin A aldehyde, also known as retinal, is the closest component to all-trans retinoic acid. It is generated by the oxidation and cleavage of β-carotene. Reduction yields retinol, and oxidation yields retinoic acid. Retinal is the coenzyme of rhodopsin. Within visual cells, 11-cis retinal and opsin form visual pigments. After absorbing light, 11-cis retinal is isomerized to all-trans retinal, which causes a conformational change in rhodopsin and initiates neural impulses to the brain, thereby forming vision.

    There are 16 stereoisomers. 13 of them have been chemically synthesized, among which the 11-trans isomer is the chromophore in natural opsins. All E-type: crystalline. Melting point 64-65℃. 7E, 9Z, 11E, 13E types: melting point 56-58℃.

    Function
    Retinaldehyde is an important signal transduction molecule in the development of the eye. It plays various significant roles in the development of the eye in vertebrates. Myopia is a developmental disorder. The active expansion of the sclera of the myopic eye is an important mechanism for its elongation. Retinaldehyde may be a messenger molecule regulating the elongation of experimental myopic eyes. Studies on the relationship between retinaldehyde and the occurrence and development of experimental myopia have made certain progress. This study reviews the progress in the research on retinaldehyde and its nuclear receptors, retinaldehyde changes in the retina, choroid, and sclera of experimental myopic eyes, and retinaldehyde as a messenger molecule transmitting the elongation signal from the retina to the sclera in the eye. Retinoic acid has a very wide range of effects in dermatological diseases. However, due to local irritation, its clinical application is somewhat limited. Retinaldehyde is an intermediate metabolite of natural retinoic acid and has similar biological activities to retinoic acid. Moreover, the skin has a significantly better tolerance to it than retinoic acid. This article reviews the metabolism and biological activities of retinaldehyde in the body and in the skin, as well as its application in dermatology. Although quitting smoking can significantly reduce the risk of lung cancer, for those who have quit smoking for 20 years, their risk of developing this cancer is still twice as high as that of non-smokers. The research results of American experts show that for such quitters, taking an appropriate amount of retinaldehyde (i.e., derivatives of vitamin A retinol and retinoic acid) daily can further effectively reduce the possibility of developing lung cancer. Relevant research reports were recently published in the Journal of the American College of Cancer Research. Dr. Jonathan M. Kurie, a medical doctor from the M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Center of the University of Texas, and others conducted this study comparing the effects of two different retinal aldehydes on the retinoic acid beta receptor (RARbeta) in the lung tissues of 226 quitters. This receptor's reduction is usually considered a precursor to the occurrence of pre-cancerous tumors. At the beginning of the experiment, about 60% of the volunteers had a reduction in RARbeta receptor numbers. After taking 9-cisRA retinaldehyde for three months (twice a day), it was found that the number of RARbeta receptors in this group of volunteers increased significantly, but those who took another retinaldehyde showed no significant difference from the ineffective control group. In addition, experts also believe that the effects of retinaldehyde may be different for those who are still smoking.
