Glutaraldehyde  

Glutaraldehyde is an organic compound, colorless transparent liquid, soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether and other organic solvents, commonly used as a fungicide, oilfield water injection, drilling, fracturing fluids, disinfectants, tanning agents and other fields .

Main Application:

1. Oilfield water injection

Glutaraldehyde has excellent stability in water and its bactericidal efficacy is unaffected in brine systems and hard water conditions. This ensures that the anti-microbial activity of glutaraldehyde is not reduced by prolonged transportation in pipelines. In addition, Glutaraldehyde is non-ionic and therefore does n ’ t  interfere with corrosion inhibitors, demulsifies and other surfactants.

1. Drilling, Workover, Completion and Fracturing Fluids

Glutaraldehyde is effective over a wide pH range and works better under neutral to alkaline conditions.

1. Oilfield produced water

Glutaraldehyde d oesn ’ t  react with HS or other organic acids, unlike some other biocides (isothiazolone, acrolein and formaldehyde). Its anti-microbial activity is not affected by these acids. t his ensures that all glutaraldehyde added to oilfield wells is always focused on anti-sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) and acid producing bacteria (APB).

1. Oil and gas transportation pipelines

Glutaraldehyde biocides have been shown to rapidly penetrate microbial biofilms and inactivate their proteins. Glutaraldehyde has been an effective product for controlling microorganisms in oil and gas transmission pipelines due to its excellent penetration ability and long-lasting stability.

1. Natural Gas and Hydrocarbon Storage Facilities

Hydrocarbon storage tanks and underwater wells are often contaminated with SRBs and act as hosts for microorganisms. The H2S and hydrocarbons produced by these microorganisms will corrode the storage tanks. Due to the hydrophilic nature of the aldehyde group, glutaraldehyde is preferentially partitioned to the aqueous phase in mixed hydrocarbon/water systems and is therefore highly bactericidal.

1. Production Wells

Injection of scale and corrosion inhibitors into production wells may introduce microorganisms into the production equipment and form. The addition of glutaraldehyde (extrusion therapy) can help control these microorganisms and may help reduce the occurrence of MICs in production equipment.

1. Glutaraldehyde compounding with other products

Glutaraldehyde is an aldehyde disinfectant with broad-spectrum, high-efficiency and quick-acting disinfection. It has good killing effect on bacterial propagules, spores, viruses, tuberculosis bacilli and fungi, etc. It is usually compounded with benzalkonium chloride or THPS in the process of sterilization in oil field, which is a strong synergistic disinfectant and fungicide with high permeability to achieve rapid and efficient disinfecting effect.
