Talc is a magnesium-rich layered hydrated silicate mineral. The monoclinic crystal system usually presents as leaf-like, scale-like, granular, fibrous aggregates or dense masses. The colors are white, light green, light gray, light yellow, light brown or pink, etc. Sometimes it is stained green, black or dark gray by impurities. It has a vitreous or oily luster, and the cleavage surface shows a pearly luster.

With a hardness of 1 to 1.5, it is the mineral with the lowest hardness, and its density is 2.7 to 2.8 g/cm³. It has a slippery and lubricating feel. Under ultraviolet light, it emits a white fluorescence. It has high electrical insulation and thermal insulation properties, with a refractoriness of up to 1490 to 1510°C. It has lipophilic and hydrophobic properties, is insoluble in water, and has stable chemical properties. Pure talc usually does not react with strong acids or strong bases. It is formed by hydrothermal metasomatism of magnesium-rich basic rocks and carbonates and alteration of ultrabasic rocks.
