What is sulforaphane?

Sulforaphane belongs to a class of compounds known as isothiocyanates. In 1992, Dr Paul Talalay of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and colleagues identified sulforaphane as the most potent natural inducer of phase II detoxification enzymes to date. These enzymes eliminate multiple types of free radicals and environmental pollutants, triggering sustained antioxidant effects lasting up to three days. These compounds and their mechanisms have been extensively studied, supported by over 1,700 scientific publications.

Sulforaphane (1-isothiocyanato-4-methylsulfonylbutane), also known as ‘ rapeseed isothiocyanate ’ , is an isothiocyanate with a relative molecular mass of 177.3 and the molecular formula C6H11S2NO.
