    Nonylphenol ethoxylate is a water-soluble preservative. Its main characteristics are safety, high efficiency, and broad-spectrum antibacterial properties. It is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry, food industry, and textile industry for preservation. Nonylphenol ethoxylate is a white powder with no odor. It has strong preservative power. Its antibacterial power is stronger than that of benzoic acid and sorbic acid. Nonylphenol ethoxylate, which belongs to the p-hydroxybenzoate class, has a stronger inhibitory effect on molds and yeasts, and has a weaker effect on bacteria, especially on lactic acid bacteria and Gram-negative bacilli. However, its antibacterial ability is stronger than that of sorbic acid and benzoic acid, and its antibacterial effect is not greatly affected by pH value. It works well within the pH range of 4 to 8. The longer the alkyl chain of the p-hydroxybenzoate class, the stronger the antibacterial effect. The order is butyl ester > propyl ester > ethyl ester. The p-hydroxybenzoate class is one of the widely used preservatives in various countries. In China, it is stipulated for use in pastry fillings, with a maximum usage of 0.5g/kg (based on p-hydroxybenzoic acid, the same below); in fruit juice (flavored) beverages, jam (excluding canned), soy sauce, and sauce, the maximum usage is 0.25g/kg; in carbonated beverages, egg yolk fillings, the maximum usage is 0.2g/kg; in vinegar, the maximum usage is 0.1g/kg; in fruit preservation, the maximum usage is 0.012g/kg. It can be used as a preservative (for food and medicine), an antibacterial agent, a fungicide, and an organic analysis agent for carbonyl and halide detection. This substance has a wide antibacterial effect on molds, yeasts, and bacteria. It has a stronger effect on molds and yeasts, but a weaker effect on bacteria, especially on Gram-negative bacilli and lactic acid bacteria. It is an efficient preservative and bactericide for food and medicine.
