1) Organic Synthesis (Largest Application)

- Bromination reagent and selective bromination catalyst
- Catalyst for Sandmeyer reaction, Ullmann coupling
- Raw material for pharmaceutical intermediates, pesticides, dyes, and flame retardants

2) Electronic & Optoelectronic Materials

- Dopant for PEDOT:PSS hole-transport layers in solar cells and OLEDs
- Component of copper etching solutions and electroplating baths
- Laser media, temperature indicators, and optical sensing materials

3) Batteries & New Energy

3. Production Processes

Process 1: Hydrobromic Acid – Copper Oxide Method (Main Industrial Route)

1. Reaction:
CuO + 2HBr → CuBr₂ + H₂O
2. React high-purity copper oxide with hydrobromic acid under controlled temperature
3. Filtration to remove insoluble impurities and heavy metals
4. Concentration and crystallization under reduced pressure
5. Separation and low-temperature vacuum drying
6. Dehydration to produce anhydrous product

Advantages: Mature, stable, low cost;
Disadvantages: Long process for anhydrous grade.

Process 2: Direct Bromination (For High-Purity & Anhydrous Grade)

1. Use high-purity copper powder and refined liquid bromine
2. Reaction under inert (N₂) atmosphere at 40–60 °C
3. Complete bromination to form CuBr₂
4. Remove excess bromine and purify
5. Recrystallization or membrane purification for ultra-high purity

Advantages: Low impurities, ideal for anhydrous grade;
Disadvantages: Strict safety and corrosion-resistant equipment required.

Process 3: Double Decomposition Method

- Copper salt (CuSO₄, CuCl₂) + NaBr / KBr → metathesis reaction → CuBr₂
- Used mainly for industrial grade
- Disadvantage: High anion impurities, not suitable for high-end fields.
