Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a vital cellular coenzyme existing in two interconvertible redox forms: oxidized NAD⁺ (CAS: 58-68-4) and reduced NADH (CAS: 606-68-8). Physically, both appear as white, hygroscopic amorphous powders that are highly water-soluble (up to 50 mg/mL in water) but insoluble in organic solvents like acetone; solid NAD is stable when stored dry and in the dark, with a melting point around 140–142 °C (decomposition)[2]. Chemically, NAD has the molecular formula C₂₁H₂₇N₇O₁₄P₂ (molar mass ~663.43 g/mol) and exists as a dinucleotide linking adenine and nicotinamide via phosphodiester bonds[5]. In aqueous solution, NAD⁺ is colorless and stable for ~1 week at 4 °C under neutral pH but decomposes rapidly in acidic or alkaline conditions, forming enzyme-inhibitory byproducts.
