    Application & Synthesis
    Description
    Iodine is a non‑metallic halogen element. Elemental iodine exists as purplish‑black lustrous crystals, which can sublime slowly. Its vapor exhibits purple color with pungent odor.
    It is slightly soluble in water and prone to hydrolysis to form weakly acidic solution. It shows good solubility in multiple organic solvents. Solution color varies in different solvents due to solvation effect.
    Chemically, iodine acts as mild oxidizing agent in acidic aqueous medium. It can react with diverse metals, non‑metals and other halogen elements. It generates characteristic blue complex when interacting with starch.
    Application
    ‑ Raw material for production of various iodide compounds
    ‑ Applied in manufacturing of pesticides, feed additives, dyes, test papers and chemical reagents
    ‑ Used for electronic industry and high‑purity reagent preparation
    ‑ Applied in volumetric titration, colorimetric analysis and chemical catalysis
    ‑ Used as raw material for pharmaceutical intermediate synthesis
    Production Method
    Ion‑exchange process: Soak kelp raw material, remove impurities by alkali treatment, adjust pH value, perform oxidation by chlorine gas, adsorb with ion‑exchange resin, desorption and precipitation, then melt‑refine with concentrated sulfuric acid to obtain finished iodine.
    Air‑blowing process: Acidify bittern feedstock, oxidize by chlorine, blow out iodine with heated air, reduce by sulfur dioxide solution, re‑oxidize and precipitate, followed by melt‑refining for purification.
    Recrystallization: Industrial‑grade iodine is purified via recrystallization to get high‑purity iodine product.
