Description
Bromide is a halogen anion, also a monoatomic bromine, and is the conjugate base of hydrobromic acid. Bromide is a compound containing bromide ions or ligands, usually in solid or solution form, with a molecular weight of 79.904, a white or light yellow appearance, and chemical properties similar to chloride ions. It has a certain solubility and can dissolve in water to form bromide ions. Bromide can form compounds with other metals under certain conditions, such as silver bromide. Bromide compounds, especially potassium bromide, were often used as sedatives in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and continued until 1975, when bromide was withdrawn as an ingredient due to chronic toxicity.

Bromide Use and Manufacturing
Bromide can be prepared by dissolving bromine or hydrobromic acid in water and reacting alkaline bromides. For example, sodium bromide can be obtained by reacting hydrobromic acid with sodium hydroxide, and then pure bromide can be obtained by the alcohol acid method or cation exchange method. Bromide is used to make various bromine compounds and can also be used in industries such as medicine, dyes, and fragrances. It is the basic raw material for making various inorganic bromides such as sodium bromide, potassium bromide, lithium bromide and calcium bromide and some alkyl bromides such as methyl bromide and ethyl bromide. Bromide is used in medicine to synthesize sedatives and anesthetics. Bromide is also a good solvent for some metal minerals and is used for the refining of high-purity metals.
