Description
White SolidSibutramine was introduced as Meridia in the US for the control of obesity, in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet. Sibutramine can be prepared in four steps from 4-chlorobenzyl cyanide. Sibutramine acts as a serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor ; in animal studies, it reduces energy intake by creating a satieted feeling and increases energy expenditure by enhancing thermogenesis. In a clinical study in obese patients treated with 10 or 15 mg of Sibutramine once-d
Meridia is a DEA Schedule IV controlled substance. Substances in the DEA Schedule IV have a low potential for abuse relative to substances in Schedule III.

Drug Information
Mood-stimulating drugs used primarily in the treatment of affective disorders and related conditions. Several MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS are useful as antidepressants apparently as a long-term consequence of their modulation of catecholamine levels. The tricyclic compounds useful as antidepressive agents (ANTIDEPRESSIVE AGENTS, TRICYCLIC) also appear to act through brain catecholamine systems. A third group (ANTIDEPRESSIVE AGENTS, SECOND-GENERATION) is a diverse group of drugs including some that act specifically on serotonergic systems. (See all compounds classified as Antidepressive Agents.)|Agents that are used to suppress appetite. (See all compounds classified as Appetite Depressants.)
