Description

Isoxicam is an orally active, long-acting, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent for the research of arthritis[1]. Isoxicam is a nonselective inhibitor of COX-1 and COX-2[2].

Isoxicam is a monocarboxylic acid amide that is piroxicam in which the pyrid-2-yl group is replaced by a 5-methyl-1,2-oxazol-3-yl group. A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, it was withdrawn from the market in the 1980s following its association with cases of Stevens-Johnson syndrome. It has a role as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and an antirheumatic drug. It is a benzothiazine, a member of isoxazoles and a monocarboxylic acid amide.|Isoxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is not marketed in the United States.

Drug Information

Anti-inflammatory agents that are non-steroidal in nature. In addition to anti-inflammatory actions, they have analgesic, antipyretic, and platelet-inhibitory actions. They act by blocking the synthesis of prostaglandins by inhibiting cyclooxygenase, which converts arachidonic acid to cyclic endoperoxides, precursors of prostaglandins. Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis accounts for their analgesic, antipyretic, and platelet-inhibitory actions; other mechanisms may contribute to their anti-inflammatory effects.
