Description

translucent crystals or white powder Sodium thiosulfate occurs as odorless and colorless crystals, acrystalline powder or granules. It is efflorescent in dry air anddeliquescent in moist air.


Sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate is a hydrate consisting of sodium thiosulfate with 5 mol eq. of water. It has a role as an antidote to cyanide poisoning, a nephroprotective agent and an antifungal drug. It contains a sodium thiosulfate.|Sodium Thiosulfate is a water soluble salt and reducing agent that reacts with oxidizing agents. Although its exact mechanism of action is unknown, thiosulfate likely provides an exogenous source of sulfur, thereby hastening the detoxification of cyanide through the enzyme rhodanese (thiosulfate cyanide sulfurtransferase) which converts cyanide to the relatively nontoxic, excretable thiocyanate ion. In addition, this agent neutralizes the reactive alkylating species of nitrogen mustard, thereby decreasing skin toxicity related to nitrogen mustard extravasation. (NCI04)

Uses

Used as a dechlorinating agent after bleaching paper pulp and cotton fabrics, as a chelating agent and antioxidant in the food industry, as a detergent and disinfectant in the pharmaceutical industry; used as a dechlorination agent in natural gas, naphtha, syngas, hydrogen nitrogen and other gases Hydrogen chloride to protect downstream catalysts from poisoning. If the gas contains organic chlorine, it should be converted into hydrogen chloride through a cobalt-molybdenum hydrogenation catalyst before using a dechlorinating agent to absorb hydrogen chloride. Used as analytical reagent, mordant and fixer; suitable for the removal of chlorine such as hydrogen, nitrogen, syngas, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, naphtha, etc.
