Drug Function and Efficacy
This product is an anticonvulsant and a specific analgesic for trigeminal neuralgia. It may work by inhibiting polysynaptic effects and blocking post-tetanic enhancement, significantly reducing or eliminating the pain caused by stimulation of the infraorbital nerve in rats and cats, and reducing the thalamic potential, medulla oblongata and polysynaptic reflexes (including glossomaxillary reflex) in cats. Its main metabolite, carbamazepine-10, 11-epoxide, shows anticonvulsant effects in some epilepsy model animals.
