Description

2-Chlorophenol is a colourless to light brown liquid, All isomers have a characteristic odor. It is used to make dyes and other chemicals, and as a disinfectant, bactericide, and germicide.

2-Chlorophenol or ortho-chlorophenol is an organic compound, a derivative of phenol. Related compounds are used as a disinfectant agents and various pesticides. This particular compound has few other applications, but is an intermediate in the polychlorination of phenol. 2-chlorophenol is a colorless to amber liquid with an unpleasant, penetrating (carbolic) odor. It sinks in water and slowly dissolves. The compound is known to be soluble in ethanol, ether, benzene, and caustic alkali solutions.

2-Chlorophenol Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Ortho-chlorophenol is a co-product of the production of p-chlorophenol. Chlorinated with phenol produces ortho- and para-chlorophenols. After separation, p-chlorophenol and o-chlorophenol can be obtained.

Uses

Used in medicine, pesticides and dyes and other organic synthetic materials
