Description

Methyl parathion is a white to yellow-brown, crystalline solid with a garlic odor.It is slightly soluble in water and has a low vapor pressure (U.S. EPA, 2006b).

Methyl parathion is a white crystalline solid which is often dissolved in a liquid solvent carrier. The commercial product is a tan liquid (xylene solution) with a pungent odor. It is slightly soluble to insoluble in water. Usually with the liquid solvent it is a combustible liquid. It is toxic by inhalation, ingestion and skin absorption. It is used as an insecticide.

Parathion-methyl Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

By O, O- dimethyl sulfide phosphorus oxychloride in the solvent and condensation of p-nitrophenol derived. Azeotropically dehydrate xylene and sodium p-nitrophenol at 96°C (73.3-76.0kPa) for 2-3 hours, add sodium carbonate and copper powder, heat up to about 90°C, and drop O, O-dimethylthio Phosphorus oxychloride. After adding, stir and keep warm for 2-3h. Cool to 50 ℃, filter, rinse the filter residue with a small amount of xylene, the filtrate is washed with 5% sodium carbonate solution until colorless, and then washed with saturated saline to neutrality, separate the oil layer, and distill off xylene under reduced pressure to obtain methyl Parathion crude oil. The original drug is light yellow to light brown liquid or solid. Raw material consumption quota: 210kg/t yellow phosphorus, 690kg/t chlorine gas, 200kg/t sulfur, 600kg/t methanol, 730kg/t sodium p-nitrophenolate.
