2-Fluoro-5-methylpyridine Use and Manufacturing
To a solution of 2-amino-5-methylpyridine (13) (20.0 g, 185 mmol) in fluoroboric acid (50 wtpercent in water, 50 mL), was added portionwise at -10 °C, sodium nitrite (16.6 g, 240 mmol), while maintaining the temperature below 0 °C. The reaction was stirred at 0 °C for 30 min, then at 50 °C for 30 min. After cooling to room temperature, the mixture was basified (pH 9-10) with a saturated aqueous sodium carbonate solution (250 mL) and extracted with dichloromethane (4 x 125 mL). The combined organic layers were dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography on alumina (dichloromethane) to give 2-fluoro-5-methylpyridine (14) (7.50 g, 69 mmol) as a yellow oil. Yield 37percent; R
