A halogenated ketone. Ketones are reactive with many acids and bases liberating heat and flammable gases (e.g., H2). The amount of heat may be sufficient to start a fire in the unreacted portion of the ketone. Ketones react with reducing agents such as hydrides, alkali metals, and nitrides to produce flammable gas (H2) and heat. Ketones are incompatible with isocyanates, aldehydes, cyanides, peroxides, and anhydrides. They react violently with aldehydes, HNO3, HNO3 + H2O2, and HClO4.

The major hazards encountered in the use and handling of bischloromethyl ketone stem from its toxicologic properties. Toxic by all routes (ie, inhalation, ingestion, and dermal absorption), exposure to this crystalline substance may occur from its use as vesicant or in the synthesis of citric acid. Effects from exposure may include contact burns to the skin and eyes, and even death with sufficiently high concentrations. In activities or situations where over exposure may occur, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus and chemical protective clothing which is specifically recommended by the shipper or producer. If contact should occur. immediately flush affected skin or eyes with running water for at least 15 minutes, and remove contaminated clothing and shoes at the site. While bischloromethyl ketone does not ignite easily, it may burn with the production of irritating and poisonous gases. Also, containers may explode violently in the heat of a fire. Fires involving bischloromethyl ketone may be extinguished with dry chemical, CO2, Halon, water spray, fog, or standard foam. Fight the fire from as far a distance as possible, and dike runoff from fire control water. Containers for international shipment by air and water must bear the labels, "Corrosive" and "Poison", respectively. Small spills of bischloromethyl ketone may be taken up and placed into containers for later disposal (liquid solutions are first absorbed by sand or other noncombustible material). Large liquid spills should be diked far ahead of the spill area for later disposal. Prior to implementing land disposal of bischloromethyl ketone, consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance.

Warning: Bis(chloromethyl) ketone may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through skin. Signs and Symptoms of Bis(chloromethyl) Ketone Exposure: Signs and symptoms of acute exposure to bis(chloromethyl) ketone include burning of the skin and mucous membrane surfaces. Eye exposure may result in pain, lacrimation (tearing), and corneal damage. Tachycardia (rapid heart beat), hypothermia (low body temperature), nausea and vomiting may also be noted. Inhalation exposure may produce respiratory depression, dyspnea (difficult or labored breathing) and gasping. Skin exposure to the liquid or vapor may result in dermatitis and paresthesia (burning or prickling sensation) of affected areas. CNS depression may be noted following inhalation. Headache, dizziness, fainting, tremor, and coma are also potential symptoms. Emergency Life-Support Procedures: Acute exposure to bis(chloromethyl) ketone may require decontamination and life support for the victims. Emergency personnel should wear protective clothing appropriate to the type and degree of contamination. Air-purifying or supplied-air respiratory equipment should also be worn, as necessary. Rescue vehicles should carry supplies such as plastic sheeting and disposable plastic bags to assist in preventing spread of contamination. Inhalation Exposure: 1. Move victims to fresh air. Emergency personnel should avoid self-exposure to bis(chloromethyl) ketone. 2. Evaluate vital signs including pulse and respiratory rate, and note any trauma. If no pulse is detected, provide CPR. If not breathing, provide artificial respiration. If breathing is labored, administer oxygen or other respiratory support. 3. Obtain authorization and/or further instructions from the local hospital for performance of other invasive procedures. 4. Transport to a health care facility. Dermal/Eye Exposure: 1. Remove victims from exposure. Emergency personnel should avoid self-exposure to bis(chloromethyl) ketone. 2. Evaluate vital signs including pulse and respiratory rate, and note any trauma. If no pulse is detected, provide CPR. If not breathing, provide artificial respiration. If breathing is labored, administer oxygen or other respiratory support. 3. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing as soon as possible. 4. If eye exposure has occurred, eyes must be flushed with lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes. 5. Wash exposed skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. 6. Obtain authorization and/or further instructions from the local hospital for performance of other invasive procedures. 7. Transport to a health care facility. Ingestion Exposure: 1. Evaluate vital signs including pulse and respiratory rate, and note any trauma. If no pulse is detected, provide CPR. If not breathing, provide artificial respiration. If breathing is labored, administer oxygen or other respiratory support. 2. Obtain authorization and/or further instructions from the local hospital for administration of an antidote or performance of other invasive procedures. 3. DO NOT induce vomiting. 4. Immediately dilute with milk or water in the non-respiratory compromised patient. Give children up to 1 year old, 125 mL (4 oz or 1/2 cup); children 1 to 12 years old, 200 mL (6 oz or 3/4 cup); adults, 250 mL (8 oz or 1 cup). Water or milk should be given only if victims are conscious and alert. 5. Transport to a health care facility. (EPA, 1998)
