In March, the national coke output dropped by 2.4% year on year
According to the latest data released by the National Bureau of statistics on April 17, in March 2020, the national coke output was 38.03 million tons, down 2.4% year on year. From January to March 2020, the national coke output is 109.5 million tons, down 4.1% year on year, 1.4 percentage points lower than that from January to February. 2017-2018 is the supply side reform year of the coking industry. After the backward production capacity is eliminated in the past two years, the later coke production will gradually tend to be stable, and the coke production will maintain at the level of about 430 million tons. After entering 2019, with the implementation of the policy of environmental protection and production restriction in the coking industry no longer being carried out in one size fits all, the start-up of the coking plant overall remained at a high level, and the coke output in 2019 reached a record high. In 2019, the total coking capacity of China will be about 640 million tons, including 550 million tons of conventional coke oven capacity, about 70 million tons of semi coke and blue carbon capacity, and 19 million tons of heat recovery coke oven capacity. Among them, the coking capacity of steel plants in conventional coke ovens is 210 million tons, accounting for 37%, and the independent coking capacity is 340 million tons, accounting for 63%.
The proportion of coking capacity with the height of 4.3m or less in the national carbonization chamber is 36.7%, which is the key point for the coke industry to eliminate backward capacity. In the future, due to the normalization of environmental protection inspection and the continuous improvement of the entry threshold of coking industry, the proportion of independent coking capacity will gradually decrease, and the capacity of coke plants with wet quenching capacity and blast furnace capacity of 4.3m and below will gradually withdraw from the market. Some analysts say that from the perspective of capacity, the capacity of coke in 2020 may show an increase trend. In the future, the newly increased production capacity will be up to about 100.51 million tons, with a large number, mainly concentrated in Shanxi. According to the statistics of local policy documents, about 30 million tons of capacity may be withdrawn or replaced in 2020, while about 44 million tons of capacity will be released in 2020 for the pre built or newly built capacity. On the whole, it is estimated that the coke production capacity will increase by about 2.0% in 2020 through reduction, integration and production of new capacity.
